PROJECT
FUSE
2021

@ Division of Industrial Design, National University of Singapore
BRIEF
A series of 4 mark-making exercises with increasing complexity were conducted at the start of the project, for students to explore motifs and visuals that are unique and innate within them as creatives. These visuals are then translated into a series of signature products that are authentic to the visual identity of each young designer.

DOMAIN
visual identity, product design
This project was inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci's Codex Atlanticus, which documented many of his ingenious drawings throughout his lifetime. Similarly, this project seeks to bring students back into the charming tradition of mark-making as a designer's most authentic source of inspiration.

Shown below are 70 of the nearly 600 drawings created over the first half of the project, achieved through a series of mark-making exercises over the course of 4 weeks. 250 selected motifs are then compiled into a book, thus creating the designer's unique visual diary.
The mark-making exercises comprised of 4 main stages with increasing visual complexity: Line, Shape, Form and Structure, of which students were to generate at least 100 motifs for each stage.

After compiling the selected motifs, I selected one (#358, as shown below) to be further developed into three signature homeware products.
PROPOSITION
By distilling one signature motif (shown below) out of nearly 600 created through a month of mark- making exercises, I propose a series of three homeware products (ie. modular shelves, candlestick holders, and glassware) characterised by its distinctive H-shaped motif that elegantly branches out and reconnects.
PRODUCT 1 : MODULAR SHELVES
The H-shaped modular shelves allow them to be stackable, whilst their powder-coated steel frames give a subtle modern contrast to the Southeast Asian classic rattan racks.
PRODUCT 2 : CANDLESTICK HOLDERS
Focusing on the branching and reconnecting motif, cylindrical connectors allow the modules to be angled freely yet securely when stacked together.
The speckled ceramic finish captures the grainy nature of dried chinese ink.
PRODUCT 3 : GLASSWARE
Designed to contain 3 different liquid capacities, the reeded glass profile on the exterior interacts with its smooth sloped interior, naturally creating H-shaped motifs throughout the smoked glass.
